[Summer] Cinematic Style: Sharon Stone in 'Basic Instinct'

Everyone remembers that scene from Basic Instinct. But the rest of Catherine Trammel's wardrobe is also worth mentioning. For nearing the end of summer, the easy colors, fabrics and silhouettes make for great transitional wear into the fall. It helps that Catherine lives on the beach in San Francisco; with the crisp, clean and cool ocean breeze.

Ya know, for some who is so sexually charged (okay, kind of slutty but don't get me wrong, she owns the film and is such a strong female character), her clothes are very modest, clean cut and actually pretty classic. Yeah, even that white dress is classic. What I really love about the 90s (this film is from 1992), are the silhouettes. I love the high waisted mom jeans, the boat neck tops with a slouchy blazer or sweater (or combination of both) and some knee high or ankle boots (never in the middle). Sharon Stone pulled it off so well; I mean her body is top notch. She makes the clothes look exactly how they're supposed to look: casual, comfortable and simple. The all white look Catherine is wearing as she stands in front of the outdoor fire over looking the beach, post-shower-post-sex is perfection. There are three different shades of off white in the look and it all comes together so perfectly (sort of like the movie actually).

Catherine's wardrobe is quite all-American with its basic (heh) pieces: jeans, sweaters, boots, sexy going out dress (and fabulous hair and accessories). The colors are neutral, letting her "personality" (a.k.a. seduction/manipulation powers) shine through. To end the summer and this special Cinematic Style series, I think Miss Trammel's simple end-of-summer-into-fall wardrobe is the perfect choice.

Summer Uniform Pt.. 1

H&M scoop neck t-shirt, Old Navy Sweetheart skinny jeans (cuffed), Steven Madden sandals, Ray Ban wayfarers, brown leather belt, Marc by Marc Jacobs cross body bag, Revlon nail polish in Seashells, Neutrogena Revitalizing lip balm in Berry

summer uniform pt. 3

thrifted chambray button down, black shorts, Crown Vintage ankle boots, Ray Ban wayfarers, Marc by Marc Jacobs cross body bag, Essie's "Fishnet Stockings", Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh, Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm in Berry, stacked silver rings

Since I started working at a bakery with an all black uniform, I haven't been able to wear a lot of normal, off-duty clothes. On my days off, I normally potter around in running shorts and an oversized men's button down but when I do go out, I've been mostly wearing these two outfits.

Beauty:
I've been switching between the pale pink polish by Revlon and Essie's Fishnet Stockings so far. Currently, I have a silver have moon inspired by Lizzy Caplan in Bachelorette. I also impulse bought the Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm and I'm glad I did because it's wonderful. I love having lip balm, etc. on my lips and I hate having to reapply all the time. This lip balm makes your lips feel full and hydrated after it wears off so that feeling to constantly reapply is gone. Also, it's tinted so it brings something extra to every day wear. During the summer I also love to wear Daisy Eau So Fresh by Marc Jacobs. It's very light and pretty.

Accessories:
My trusty Marc Jacobs bag has been a staple for me since May of last year and I see no sign of me getting tired of it. Same with my Ray Bans. I have had them for six years (the case is hammered) and they have been everywhere from San Diego to Big Bear to the deserts of Utah to suburbia in Michigan. Again, no sign of these suckers leaving willingly anytime soon. I bought these Steve Madden sandals at the end of last summer and I'm so glad I did. I looked for a pair just like this for two or three years and finally stumbled upon them in the dead of August. But I'm also in love with my ankle boots and can't seem to stop wearing those despite the 80 degree weather.

Clothes:
The basic t-shirts at H&M are actually really good. I needed some new ones in a new style (went from crew neck to scoop) and thought I would try them out. They're cheap, around $7 (actually got mine 2 for $10) and are soft and retain their shape after you wash them. Another good surprise purchase, Old Navy jeans. They really know how to make jeans for curvier girls. I was always told not to wear skinny jeans because of my hips and legs but Old Navy's Sweetheart fit banish that rule. I've also been wearing some thrifted black shorts and a vintage men's chambray shirt (not that one from J.Crew unfortunately).

spring/summer 2014

1 - 2: Hérmes, Christopher Kane, 3 - 4: Chloé

Into blush tones and white for this spring and summer. Basically all I want to wear is peach, nude and white with maybe a splash of blue every once and a while. And I can't forget my cognac brown sandals that were a dream come true at the end of last summer. I want to wear easy t-shirts, easy shorts, and tortoise shell sunglasses.

Goals:

1. internship + job
2. clean out/organize wardrobe
3. go to the beach
4. change license
5. get a passport
6. make this lemon berry cake
7. get a summer glow

1. Georgia May Jagger as a beauty icon
2. Bossa Nova music
3. Tensnake's album "Glow"
